How to setup a good password.

Choosing a good password:

Passwords are like the keys to a vault. They are a first line of defense in protecting computer systems from unauthorized use. NEVER give your password to ANYONE! You are responsible for safeguarding your accounts by choosing good passwords and changing them regularly. Weak passwords (e.g. names, birthdays, etc.) can be easily guessed, allowing accounts to be exploited. It is important that passwords be changed at a regular interval, because even the best passwords can be compromised. The use of strong passwords acts as a firm deterrent against password guessing attacks. At the end of this training session you will find information to help you change your password(s).

What makes a strong password?

Make it easy to remember! Forgetting your password is a good way of keeping everyone out including you.
Make it impossible to guess. It should be virtually impossible to guess your password. Your password will be easily guessed if you use your login name or your real name as your password. Also avoid using common words like "aggie" or any other TAMU related words.
At least 8 characters. A four letter password for example, can be easily "cracked" by virtually any computer. What is a cracking program?
Use letters, numbers and other keys. All passwords should have letters (upper- and lower-case), numeric keys, and non-alpha numeric keys (e.g. ~!@#$%^&*()<>).
Don't use words in the dictionary. Passwords should not contain any sequences of 4 or more letters (regardless of how you capitalize them), that can be found in a dictionary. More password/dictionary information.
Here are some examples of really bad passwords:

david00 - based on the username
dav3 - based on the username, with an obvious transformation
elizabeth - family member's name (in a dictionary, and easily guessed as well)
htebazile - family member's name spelled backwards
BMW325 - it's a name of a car
12345678 - people can watch you type it easily
quepaso - common phrases in other languages
skywalker - it's in a sci-fi dictionary

So, how do you choose a good password?

Pick a phrase that has some meaning or significance to you, but not to anyone else.
Then transform it in some manner so that the final result is consistent with the guidelines above.

Here are some examples of good passwords:

u2canB$$ - "You too can be rich"
!putA0xU - "I put a hex on you"
d4VIdb!F*n - "david is fun"
2kewl4U! - "too cool for you"

However, now that they have been listed, they are now BAD passwords :)

Dangerous practices:

Writing down passwords is always dangerous, especially if they are in plain view such as being written on sticky notes on a computer monitor. Yet time after time users do just that. If you must write a password on a piece of paper, ALWAYS use some sort of code that no one else will be able to understand. Keep it hidden from others!

Some users choose to keep one username and password and use it for multiple accounts on multiple computers. This can be a VERY dangerous problem. If a hacker were able to breach one account, then they will also be able to gain entry (as an authorized user) to all other systems the user may access.
